Beeswax is Better

100% pure beeswax candles have arrived! We are expanding our current selection to pillars and hand dipped taper pairs in all eight available colors: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, and black! We have also restocked glass jar beeswax sanctuary candles in two sizes, large heart pillars, and tealights.

Why burn beeswax over other candles? Beeswax production helps stabilize the bee population when bought from sustainability-minded companies, it burns clean and much longer than traditional candles, and your choice to buy it over paraffin speaks the only language Big Business understands: Money! E

very time you purchase a beeswax candle, you help us show manufacturers that we are ready to move away from petroleum byproducts and into a future of environmental sustainability and harmony.

TONIGHT! Love Trumps Hate: Meditation and Healing through Divine Love

Tonight, Friday, January 27, 2017 starting at 6:00pm. $10 suggested donation

Are the current politics stressing you out? Tonight we will create a sanctuary of peace — a safe, supportive, spiritual space for all of us to connect to the awesome power of Divine Love through a guided meditation, and an intention circle that will offer healing, balancing, and protection–but more importantly, clear vision, effective communication, wisdom and compassion–for everyone within our nation, all the way to the top. Love ALWAYS trumps hate. We will magickally aid the arc of the moral universe towards justice.

Note: We won’t discuss politics, but call on the powers of love to restore and empower us all, so that we may continue the good work in whatever ways we are individually called to do beyond these sanctuary walls.

Come one, come all.

The Sojo News: Upcoming Classes

Hello Sojourners!
We’ve had a very blessed Samhain weekend, and hope you have as well.

Last time I wrote you with a plea for financial help so that we could pay our rent on time and boy, oh boy, did you answer that call! Thank you to all of you beautiful angels who’ve come to shop since then and bought gift certificates, made donations and investments in future events and services here. You are amazing! Miracles happened and the Universe answered the plea through the generous actions of so many of you.

The rent and back utility bills have been paid, as has the payroll, and I’ve just given Courtney the long-awaited green light to place a restocking order for herbs, spices and teas in time for Thanksgiving. Should you have a special request for that special holiday recipe or medicinal preparation, email her at courtney@thesojo.com as soon as possible.

I know that the recent election may have brought distress to some, including me, you can read my blog post here.) It may appear that the outside world is in upheaval right now, which is to be expected during any Whitehouse transition, but inside the Sojourner we still have the same safe haven of acceptance, progressive ideals, and loving support of all our beautiful diversity. As long as we Sojourners stick together, and keep “being the change we wish to see in the world,” all our dreams remain possible. Take heart, dear ones. We are here for you, so make sure to call on us should the need ever arise.
~Heron Michelle

Product Spotlight: Smoke Cleansing Supplies

This week in the shop we are offering our 20% off sale on all of our smoke cleansing supplies.  White sage, sweetgrass, lavender, rosemary, juniper, cedar and many more cleansing and purifying herbs are  rolled up and tied into bundles and then carefully burned in a variety of rituals. So why don’t I use the more accepted term smudging? Smudging refers to a very specific Native ritual that is closed to outsiders. Members of the Neo-pagan and New Age movements have borrowed this term for the act of smoke cleansing. In reality us non- Natives should stick to using smoke cleansing as our term as we don’t actually smudge anything. Using the word ‘smudge’ in an incorrect sense can slowly over time erase the actual culture basis and be harmful to the Native population as well.  In the same vein, White Ceremonial Sage has been harvested and over harvested to support the increasing demand from the New Age and Neo-pagan movements. I always suggest you support ethical harvesting in all of your plants, and remember that in Eastern NC you can grow white sage for a season and have enough to dry and use all year. This keeps the plant from becoming severely endangered and adds a personal element to your sage bundle.

Loose White Sage- Photo from Mountain Rose Herbs

Smoke Cleansing for those not in the know, is a way of removing any baneful energies from your space. I always say that its like energetic sweeping. It completely clears and resets a space. This is very beneficial to do! Good energetic hygiene as it were. Customers at the shop always ask if there is a special way to cleanse using these bundles. They want to know if there’s a super secret chant they must say for it to work, or a prayer to recite. Like most of my personal feelings on witchcraft and spirituality related issues, its all a matter of personal preference, tradition and doing what feels right. There’s no right way to light a hunk of herbs on fire and waft it around your home. As long as you don’t set anything on fire, I think you are doing it right.

Rule 1. There are no rules

Rule 2. You make your own rules.

Each different herb is going to have slightly different meanings and uses, they will also have different smells. White ceremonial sage is the most popular, most well known. It also has a specific odor that can be a bit much for sensitive folk. If lighting a bunch of herbs on fire and waving their smoldering remains through your house is not to your taste, we have Palo Santo wood that has a softer sweeter smell, or copal resin. We even have cleansing sprays that are smoke-free for those asthmatic Sojourners. AS always, anyone behind the counter is ready and able to help you answer any questions and we can steer you towards the herbal bundle that best fits your needs.

The Sojo News: Vigil for Peace, Incense, Tarot, Henna!

Hello Sojourners,
This week our people experienced tragedy when the GLBTQ community was targeted in an Orlando nightclub. Regardless of where these hate-crimes happen, its hard not to take a massacre personally. Once you are awakened to the interconnection of Spirit, everyone becomes your neighbor, your family, yourself.  We are all “just down the street” from each other.

For the queer community, a nightclub is a haven, a meeting place on common ground that provides safety and asylum. It is a temple, of sorts. A metaphysical shop like The Sojourner serves in a similar way. Since our inception, we’ve sought to be a safe haven to all the beautiful people of our town who refuse to be defined by repressive or hateful ideals prevalent in the conservative society in which we find ourselves here in North Carolina.

Sojourners take the path less-traveled, and 580211_10151603578899044_1871488614_nwhen we band together we have safety and strength in numbers; a lonely journey becomes a fun parade! Our parade is spectacular and is led by a rainbow flag flown proudly. Our rainbows do not discriminate; we welcome folks of every stripe, color, flavor, and variety–including allies. Us colorful birds of like feather stick together, so if you need a place of peace to mourn, relax, or just be you in safety, come see us and enjoy the free WI-FI and air conditioning. The Sojo aroma is complimentary, too!
~Heron Michelle

I’ve set up a place of vigil at work for victims of violence, the collection of such people that seems to grow every day. Peace is possible in our world, possible in every human being, if we can only take a moment to choose it. Compassion over ignorance and selfishness. Acceptance over hate. Coexistence over rejection. The one thing in life that truly matters more than all else is our ability to show love to others, no matter who they are, how they live, what they believe, or where they come from. I really hope that one day we can live in a world where everyone understands the importance of that.” ~Courtney Varnadoe

SojoOrlandoVigil

“We hold vigil for the victims of needless violence in the world. We stand with the women shown injustice, harm and violation by men who would deny them sovereignty. We stand with the innocent, taken from their lives for another’s selfishness. We stand with those who refuse to hide who you are, as is your right, and we remember those who suffered or died exercising and defending that right. You are whole. You are loved. You are the healers of this world and any worlds that come after. Please feel free to light a stick of incense, contemplate, offer writing or pray here. Peace is possible if we choose it.”

The Sojo News: New Ways to Stay Connected

monogramHello Sojourners!
Welcome to our new newsletter home on WordPress! I am phasing out usage of the old Reverbnation.com website and calendar. From now on, you can subscribe to this blog (see the subscription button at the bottom of this post) and when we post new updates, you can still receive notices in your email.

I’ve also created a new Facebook “Group” called The Sojourner Clubhouse that is public and open to all our customers as a guaranteed way to see what we are promoting online. Hopefully, we can stay connected and share our links to articles and newsletters, photos of new products, announcements, promotions and discuss topics of interest to you.  We welcome you to also share your own events and link to anything that would benefit our progressive, holistic, spiritual community. If you become a member, you can choose to be notified about all of the posts, rather than the rare few that FB will serve you without us paying their extortion money…ahem, I mean…their “promotion” fees. 😉

This week I am busy adding new classes and events to our schedule throughout the summer and into next fall. You’ll find descriptions below of many new offerings, and you can find even more details on individual events on our Facebook page. Stay tuned for more to come!

Bright blessings,

~Heron Michelle
